Mrs. Wilma Elaine Smith, age 81, of Sand Lake, passed away Saturday afternoon, Jan. 3, 2009 at Metron of Greenville. The daughter of Virgil & Sarah Green, she was born on April 7, 1927 in Belding.
In 1952 she married Vernon Smith and they made their home in the Sand Lake area for 30 years. Together, they enjoyed farming, draft horses, and the many lasting friendships they made. For the past 2 years Wilma resided at Metron of Greenville where she enjoyed all of the activities especially bingo, music, church, and the Red Hat Society as well as her many new friendships.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Vernon Smith on Feb. 15, 2000; a sister, Betty Dennis-Yahr-Parr; and two brothers, Leo Green and Calvin Green.
Surviving are two sons, Michael Belcher of Rockford, and Glen & Nancy Smith of Pierson; ten grandchildren; twenty great grandchildren; a sister, Donna & Fay Orvis of Greenville; a brother, Melvin Green of Belding; two sisters-in-law, Claribelle Green of Jenison and Donna Green of Greenville; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 8, 2009 at the Greenville Bible Methodist Church (corner of Edgewood and Greenbrier streets) where the family will receive relatives and friends from 5-6 p.m. at the church.
The Rev. Dennis Johnson will officiate, with burial taking place privately in Ashley Cemetery. The family suggests contributions in memory of Wilma to the American Diabetes Association.
