Wayne Elmer Sumerix, 82, of Stanton, Michigan, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 9, 2024, at home, surrounded by family and under the compassionate care of Corwell Health Hospice. Born on April 5, 1942, in Charlotte, Michigan, to Elmer and Mildred Marie (Goodrich) Sumerix, Wayne was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend who brought warmth, wisdom, and joy to everyone he met.
On November 29, 1968, in Grand Rapids, Wayne married the love of his life, Suzanne Lee Belland. Together, they enjoyed nearly 56 years of a marriage marked by unwavering love, deep partnership, and countless cherished memories. Wayne and Suzanne raised two daughters, sharing their values and joy for life with them and, later, with their grandchildren.
Wayne was a proud graduate of Charlotte High School who went on to attend Michigan State University and Davenport University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting. Yet his life’s work extended far beyond numbers. He was an incredibly skilled woodworker, bringing extraordinary care to each piece he created. His craftsmanship, marked by dedication and heart, filled the homes of his loved ones with beauty and meaning, leaving behind not only functional creations but also lasting memories woven with love.
Wayne’s love for the outdoors was a constant in his life. He could often be found tending his yard, spending peaceful moments on the deck, enjoying a friendly game of golf, or biking through the neighborhood. His zest for life extended to a passion for exploring America’s natural and historical treasures. With a thirst for knowledge and a deep appreciation for the country, he visited numerous national parks, historical sites, and museums, a journey that enriched his life and created treasured memories with his family.
Those who knew Wayne were blessed by his gentle spirit and guiding hand. He was not only a mentor but also a teacher who believed in sharing his knowledge and skills, inspiring those around him to understand and appreciate the world’s workings. Wayne’s wisdom and humility left a profound mark on the lives he touched.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Mildred, and his siblings, Lynn Sumerix, Linda Lehr, and Dale Sumerix. He is survived by his beloved wife, Suzanne Sumerix; their children, Karen and Craig Cloutier of Shafer, Minnesota, and Sara Sumerix of Grand Rapids; and his cherished grandchildren, Cameron and Evan Cribbs, and Isaac and Solomon Fetterley. He also leaves behind his siblings, Carl and Marti Sumerix, and Lorraine Chase; numerous nieces and nephews; and many dear friends.
Wayne’s family and friends will hold him forever in their hearts, grateful for his kindness, guidance, and the legacy of love he leaves behind.
Honoring Wayne’s wishes, private graveside services will be held at Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte, Michigan.
