Virginia Anne McRay, age 84, of Stanton, Michigan, formerly of Grand Rapids, Michigan and Chicago, Illinois, passed away Sunday, June 22, 2025 at Corewell Health-Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
The daughter of Bernard & Margaret Anne (Weatherholt) Patterson, she was born on June 15, 1941 in Chicago, Illinois and earned her Master’s Degree from Loyola University Chicago. Virginia began her career as a social worker in Chicago and retired from Grand Rapids Public Schools after substitute teaching for 15 years in 2002.
She was kind to everyone she met and was always complimenting others and asking if she could pray for their needs. She loved everyone she knew and she loved God. A very giving person, she was always concerned about others well-being and their relationship with God.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Thomas Alan McRay on January 10, 2011.
Surviving are her children, Melissa & Todd Wright of Stanton, Michigan, and James Alan & Amy McRay of Eaton Rapids, Michigan; grandchildren, Anna McRay, Andrew McRay, Jonah McRay, and Chris McRay, Aaron & Pat Abrahamson; great-grandchildren, Eudeia, Olcon, Istela Abrahamson; and Elway McRay; brothers and sisters, Robert & Vicky Patterson, Margaret Patterson, Paul & Lori Patterson; nephews and nieces, Eugene Patterson, Ana Cristina Patterson, Robert Patterson, Jr., Colleen Duerson, Venessa Coty, Theresa Sanchez, John Paul Coty, and Margo Patterson; a sister-in-law, Agnes Delionardi; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
A celebration of Virginia’s life is being planned and will be announced after the Independence Day holiday. Instead of flowers, Virginia would have appreciated contributions in her memory to the charity of ones’ choice.
