Virginia Lois “Ginny” (Ehlert) Shilling, age 101, of Langston, passed away on Sunday March 2, 2025 at home with her family by her side under the care of Corewell Health Hospice. The daughter of Fred & Hattie (Buchholz) Ehlert, she was born on June 12, 1923 in Stanton. On May 14, 1943, she married James Shilling and together they enjoyed nearly thirty-four years of marriage and raised three wonderful children.
Ginny's life was a testament to the strength and resilience of her generation. She was a talented crafter, gardener, and cook. Her crocheted mittens, socks, blankets, and slippers were found on all of her kids and grandkids, and her meals were always enjoyed during their family get-togethers.
She was a lifelong member of the Hope Lutheran Church in Stanton, and had retired from Frigidaire where she was involved with many union committees. Her laughter was contagious and her spirit was robust. If someone told her she couldn’t do something, you can believe that she’d prove them wrong. There was nothing she couldn’t do, and do it well. Ginny was a woman of many talents and passions, but none was treasured greater than her family.
Ginny was preceded in death by her parents; her husband James in 1977; a grandson, Matthew Shilling; and her brother, Harold Ehlert. She is survived by her children, Mary Reed, Robert Shilling, and Gary & Phyllis Shilling; eleven grandchildren, Kim & Ernie, Kory & Todd, Theresa, Marcie & Nate, Kasey & Nate, Amy & Mike, Hollie, Taylor, Ed, Lisa & Kevin, and Cindy & Randy; eighteen great-grandchildren; several great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 29, 2025 at Hope Lutheran Church (4741 W. Stanton Road, Stanton), with Rev. Alexander Sabol officiating and eulogy by Steven Buchholz. Burial will take place privately in the spring at Riverside Cemetery, Langston. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Ginny can be directed to Hope Lutheran Church or Corewell Health Hospice & Palliative Care West Michigan.
