Virgalene "Virgie" Marie Reeder (Johnson), age 97, of Carson City, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 5, 2022, at Spectrum Health United Hospital in Greenville. Virgie was born on March 13, 1925, in Carson City, to Leo and Hilda Johnson. She was a graduate of Carson City High School and was a long-time member of the Carson City Congregational Church. Virgie met and married the love of her life; Orville (Orv) Reeder on January 15, 1944, where they resided in Carson City. Together they ran Reeder Oil from their home, delivering fuel oil.
Orv and Virgie loved to travel together and especially loved attending as many Tigers games as they could across the Midwest. They had a love for dancing and socializing with their long-time close knit friend's circle. Orv and Virgie are remembered for their festive Christmas parties, complete with Santa himself. Their parties always included a magnificent display of holiday decorations and tables full of delicious foods candies and desserts, as she had a love for the holidays and decorating, especially for Christmas. Orv and Virgie were married 45 years before Orv passed from a brain tumor in 1989.
When Orv passed, so did a piece of Virgie. To try to help fill the void, she took up clogging with friends and her sister as well as ceramics- in addition to her talent for sewing and embroidery. She made clothing for her many grandchildren. Virgie also collected dolls and handmade clothing for them as well as embroidered pillowcases which she gifted to many over the years.
Virgie had a love for clothing and was always dressed to impress. She had an absolutely huge collection of Christmas decorations - and kept quite a home by herself until her 97th birthday, when she began to decline in health rapidly. Virgie was tough as nails, with a heart of gold and a memory that was dead on. She was known for being a spitfire, who would check herself out of a hospital against doctors and families wishes - because she "had to get home" even if that meant she took off walking.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Leo, and Hilda Johnson; her husband, Orville Reeder; her brothers, Victor Johnson, Vernon Johnson, Gary Johnson, and grand-daughter Cindy Reeder.
Virgie is survived by her daughter, Sandra (James) Beard of St Johns; son, Randy (Elbira) Reeder of Fenwick; sister, Darlene Eller (Johnson) of Sheridan; her grandchildren, Timothy (Christine) Beard of St. Clair Shores, (Samantha) Beard of Lansing, Kevin (Jessica) Reeder of Carson City, Kim ( Terry) Maniez of St Johns, Michael (Lynn) Reeder of Carson City; her great-grandchildren, Jared Beard, Emily Beard, Nick Boster, Taylor Reeder, Mackenzie Reeder, Haven Reeder, Kaylee Reeder and Gavin Reeder, also her great-great-granddaughter, Brielle Blount. Virgie leaves behind too many close friends and relatives to mention all by name -however she cherished and loved them all dearly.
The family would like to send a very special thank-you to Brenda Kirtley for her personal dedication to Virgie, always ensuring she was doing well, often spending her own time dropping by to bring her anything she needed - day or night. Without Brenda, Virgie's wish to live at home for as long as she could- would simply not have been possible. We are forever grateful you helped us grant her that wish.
We will be celebrating Virgie's life with a service on April 25th @ 1:00 p.m. @ the First Congregational Church, 306 E. Main St. Carson City.
