Thomas Herbst

February 28, 1943 — January 17, 2024

Thomas Eugene Herbst, known affectionately as Tom, was born on February 28, 1943, in Grand Rapids, MI. Tom passed away peacefully with his family by his side on on Wednesday January 17, 2024. Spirited and charismatic, he left an indelible impression on everyone he met. Tom lived a life filled with generous devotion to his family, friends, faith, and passions. He was a man of many interests, always eager to share his love for photography, coins, trains, animals, and guns. His thoughtful nature and infectious enthusiasm made even the most ordinary moments memorable. Tom was an accomplished small business owner, having run a gun store until his retirement in 2013, before that he also owned a small E.D.M machine shop. His dedication to his work was unmatched, and he found great joy in the community he built around his business. In his free time, Tom enjoyed sailing, participating in sailboat races, and was a member of The Masons and NRA. He was also a passionate collector, turning his interest in photography, music, trains, and coins into a lifelong hobby. Tom's zest for life was contagious, and he inspired those around him to pursue their interests with similar zeal. Tom is survived by his daughters, Amy (Christopher) Ellis and Katrin (Keith) Koivu; son, Graham Herbst; grandsons, Connor Sweeney, Cody Herbst, and Dillon Herbst; and granddaughters, Riley (Hudson) Neer and Madisyn Ellis. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mathias and Naomi Herbst and his brother, Robert Herbst. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be given to Centrica Care Navigators.
