Terry Dezwaan

Mr. Terry J. DeZwaan, aged 70, of Grand Rapids, a U.S. Navy veteran, passed away Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 22, 2007 at the new Metro Health Hospital, Wyoming. The son of Clarence and Edith (Gurd) DeZwaan, he was born on Feb. 27, 1937. Terry's naval career included operations in support of the failed Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba, the recovery of Apollo astronaunts and spacecraft, and the Vietnam conflict. After his discharge from the Navy, he worked at Steelcase, Kelvinator, and tended bar. He enjoyed fishing, was an avid reader, and at the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans enjoyed ceramics. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Ruth (Quillen) DeZwaan in July of 1964. Surviving are three children, Dennis DeZwaan of Grand Rapids, Jeffery DeZwaan of Mount Pleasant, Penn., and Michelle DeZwaan of Wyoming; a sister and brother-in-law, Judith & Robert Bonzheim of Fairfield Glade, Tenn.; six grandchildren; two great grandchildren; three nephews; and two nieces. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2007 from the chapel of the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans, 3000 Monroe Avenue N.W., with military honors rendered by the Kent County Veterans Honor Guard. Visitation is one hour prior to services on Tuesday.
