Steven Smith

September 11, 1964 — July 25, 2022

Steven Eugene Smith, (57) peacefully passed away on Monday, July 25, 2022 where he was a resident at MediLodge of Holland, Michigan. Steve's final days and weeks were under both the tender care of the Medilodge staff, as well as, Elara Caring Hospice of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Steve was born in Muskegon, Michigan, on September 11, 1964 to parents, Lowell and Wilma Smith. He grew up in Zeeland, MI. Steve proudly completed his GED from Zeeland Public Schools. He married and remained in Zeeland for most of his life. Steve found a successful niche as a self-employed courier driver, providing on-demand delivery service to various businesses throughout the west Michigan, northern Indiana and Illinois area's. Steve took great pride in servicing his business contracts on time, in spite of occupational challenges. He loved meeting interesting individuals along the way. Steve enjoyed observing the beautiful seasons and colors along his routes. He would often say, that he had the best job in the world! Steve enjoyed working with his hands, and welcomed both big and small challenges, brought about from maintaining and servicing his small fleet of vehicles. Steve spent his free time watching movies and listening to his eclectic music collection, spanning across all genres. He had a fond interest in eagles, both observing them in nature, as well as, in collecting statuettes. Steve enjoyed engaging in intellectually stimulating games of strategy. Steve received Christ as a young boy. As an adult, he spent many hours eagerly studying his Bible. He found it stimulating to engage in rich dialogue over Biblical scriptures and learning of their deeper meaning. For years, the joy of Steve's interests and hobbies, along with everyday living, was challenged by his condition of bipolar-schizophrenia. This condition quite often made him feel misunderstood and lonely. If he could put a voice to a cause, he would want this condition to be openly and frequently talked about, so it could be better understood by all. Several months before his death, Steve broke his back from an unfortunate fall, which resulted in paralysis of both limbs. Even still, Steve refused to let those daily challenges and debilitating pain affect his generous spirit. He continued looking for ways he could make new friends, while blessing those around him. Steve also found strength in his sense of humor, and enjoyed the laughter that came with it. Steve dearly loved his sons and grandchildren. He delighted in telling others how proud he was of them. Steve shared how his brothers and sisters brought him much joy, as did his nieces and nephews. His many friends, and his Medilodge "family," touched Steve in a very special way. Steven E. Smith will be dearly missed in all of our lives, especially as we continue journeying this side of Heaven. Steve was preceded in death by his parents; Lowell A. Smith of Sparta, MI, and Wilma Jean Purple Smith of Holland, MI, brother; Scott Edward Smith of Grand Rapids, MI, grandparents, several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
