Sharon Durkee

Sharon Durkee passed away peacefully in her sleep on December 13, 2019. Sharon was born and raised on a farm in rural Bowne Township in Kent County. Sharon was preceded in death by her husband Eldred, her parents Henry and Hilda (Yoder) Kauffman, and her sister Audrey (Ed) Kaufman. Sharon will be deeply missed by her sons Greg (Anne) Durkee and Jeff (Kristin) Durkee, along with her three granddaughters, Olivia, Sophia and Marin, her sister Ardith (Donald) Blough and many nieces and nephews, along with other friends and family. Sharon was a graduate of Lowell Senior High School and enjoyed riding her horse as well as spending time singing and dancing on the Lowell Showboat in her youth. In 1962, Sharon married her long time sweetheart, Eldred Durkee, and soon after welcomed twin boys to the world. Sharon devoted her time to being a loving mother and devoted wife, volunteering in the school library, chaperoning field trips, supporting sporting teams, and providing a welcoming home for all. While raising their two sons, Sharon and Eldred traveled and camped throughout the United States. They continued their traveling into their retirement, their favorite destination being Gulf Shores, AL. Throughout Sharon's life, she enjoyed reading and spending quality time with her friends and family, especially her beloved granddaughters Olivia, Sophia and Marin. Sharon also loved to read and could always be found with a book nearby. The family will celebrate her life with a memorial service on Thursday December 19, 2019 at 1:00 pm at the Freeport Community Center, 209 S. South St., Freeport, MI 49325. In lieu of flowers, the family requests considering a memorial donation be made to the Saranac Public Library, P.O. Box 27, Saranac, MI 48881. Cremation arrangements are entrusted to Michigan Cremation & Funeral Care, Grand Rapids.
