Mr. Roger D. Swartout, age 78, of Greenville, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday afternoon, Aug. 20, 2009 in the Emergency Room of Spectrum Health-United Hospital, Greenville.
The son of Alpha J. & Addie M. (Paskins) Swartout, he was born on Aug. 21, 1931 in Lansing. Following high school, Roger enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served in Korea, attaining the rank of sergeant.
On Jan. 16, 1954, at Lansing, he married Barbara J. Wooten. Together they raised two daughters while Roger worked for the State of Michigan Department of Agriculture, retiring as field supervisor of the Grand Rapids office. A member of Oakfield Baptist Church, he also enjoyed bowling, golfing, fishing, and playing board games. An avid reader as well, he also was a Detroit Tigers baseball fan.
Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Barbara Swartout of Greenville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Cindy & Scott Mouthaan of Kent City, and Sherry & Ross See of Woodstock, Georgia; five grandchildren, Kim See, Ryan & Lara See, Melissa See, Katelyn Mouthaan, and Leslie Mouthaan; and two great granddaughters, Jaylin See and Janelle See. Also surviving are his mother-in-law, Louise Wooten of Lansing; three brothers-in-law, Robert Wooten, Rick & Ann Wooten, and Randy & Lori Wooten; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2009 at Oakfield Baptist Church, where the family will receive relatives and friends from 2-4 p.m. at the church. Pastor Daryl Crawford will officiate and military honors, rendered by the U.S. Marine Corps, will conclude the ceremonies. Burial will take place privately on Wednesday at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Lansing.
