Robert LaVern Sly, Sr., age 86, of Sheridan, passed away Wednesday, July 14, 2021 at Spectrum Health-Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids from injuries received in an automobile accident.
The son of Ethel Bell (Baldwin) & Raymond J. Sly, Sr., he was born on February 20, 1935 in Trufant. On September 26, 1953, in Belding, he married Betty Jean Comley and together they raised five children and enjoyed nearly 68 years of marriage.
For over 40 years, Bob worked for Rush Forestry in the logging industry. He was a member of Open Door Fellowship in Carson City, and enjoyed collecting antiques, glassware, stamps, old cars, and especially Christmas village displays.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Leslie W. "Les" Sly; a granddaughter, Heidi Jean; two great-grandsons, Corey and C.J.; five sisters, Arden Sly, Sandra Hansen, Althea Nichols, Clarabelle "Phyllis" Sawdy, and Betty Sias; and three brothers, Chuck Sly, Burton Sly, and Raymond Sly, Jr.
Surviving are his wife, Betty J. Sly of Sheridan; their children, Deborah & Fred Jeffery of Sheridan, Theresa & Keith Edwards of Gowen, Nancy Sly of Reed City, and Robert L. "Bob" & Barb Sly, Jr. of Sheridan; three sisters, Freda & Gary VanBuskirk, Sharon & Lenford Collins, and Charlene Cazier; a sister-in-law, Shirley Sly; two brothers-in-law, Barry & Bonnie Emmons and Leonard Emmons; sixteen grandchildren; forty-six great-grandchildren; twenty-six great-great grandchildren; and many, many nieces and nephews.
Visitation is from 10-11 a.m. on Tuesday, August 3, 2021 at Christiansen's Michigan Cremation & Funeral Care, 511 S. Franklin Street, Greenville, where funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday. The Rev. Larry Austin, pastor of Open Door Fellowship, will officiate and burial will take place privately at Evergreen Township Cemetery near Sheridan.
