Robert Alan Smith, 68, a kind and gentle spirit, left this earthly home on November 27, 2018, to abide in his Heavenly Father's love for eternity. He personified the fruits of the spirit, and lived out the teachings of Christ with a lifelong focus and goal of caring for the marginalized and needy in his community.
He was a well-loved and spiritual man, who had a unique gift of always seeing the best in everyone. He was the center of the universe to his wife, Lissa and raised his children, Heather & April, with love and patience.
He worked in sales and mechanical design at State Supply Co. for 31 years, and eventually bought the company with partners after 18 years. After retirement he was the Director of the Food Pantry at Christian Neighbors in Douglas. He was on several boards, including the Park and Recreation Board in Saugatuck Township and the Christian Neighbors Board of Directors.
He was a member of St. Peters Catholic Church in Douglas, the Knights of Columbus, and was especially fond of the current Priest, Father Fabio, who administered Last Rites.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Hazel Smith; father, Wayne Smith; brother, Jim Smith; and two beloved dogs Jesse & Dickens.
He leaves behind wife and best friend, Lissa Smith; daughters, Heather Root and April & Brendan Nail; grandson, Abrahm Leach; brothers, Wayne & Angie Smith Jr., and Bill Smith; sisters, Faith & Rod Mottl, Patty Smith, and Mary & Don Parrot; best friends, Bill & Toni Alwin; and beloved dogs Steinee & Harree.
Per his request, no funeral or memorial will take place. He asked that his ashes be scattered in a beloved mountain range. For those who loved him and his passion for helping the poor and marginalized, donations can be made to Christian Neighbors of Douglas.
