Robert Kenneth Richmond, M.D. (1934 - 2019)
Robert Richmond died at home surrounded by family on September 25, 2019. The second of four children, Bob was born on the family farm in Lowell. He served three years in the U.S. Army, and attended Aquinas College before completing medical school at the University of Michigan in 1967. He credited the book Hans Brinker, or The Silver Skates by Mary Mapes Dodge with inspiring him to become a physician. Bob practiced medicine in Grand Rapids his entire career and remained keenly interested in science and medicine until his death.
Though usually quiet and reserved, Bob had a sly sense of humor. He was an avid reader of fiction and non-fiction alike, loved playing cards with his family, and enjoyed playing the piano. Always a lover of music, Bob met his wife Linda at a ballroom dance class at Arthur Murray Dance Studios in Grand Rapids. They celebrated their fifty-fifth wedding anniversary in July.
Bob is survived by wife, Linda (Post) Richmond; children, Christopher (Nicole Pinsky) Richmond, Angela (Teri Herberger) Richmond, and Celeste Richmond; granddaughters, Lillian and Rosalind Richmond; sister, Mary Pat Goggins; sister-in-law, Mary Margaret Richmond; and beloved nieces and nephews, Brian (Michelle) Richmond, Ben (Karen) Richmond, Mark (Sherry) Richmond, Alicia (Tim) Parker, Andrea (Dustin) Wirgau, and Elena (Brian) Scott.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Irma (Eickhoff) Richmond; brothers, David and Jerrold Richmond; and in-laws, Diane (Uzarski) Richmond and Jim Goggins. Bob was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Per his wishes, Bob was cremated. A celebration of his life will be held at Roth-Gerst Funeral Home in Lowell, Michigan, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on November 9, 2019. Contributions in Bob's memory may be made to Michigan Radio, 535 William Street, Suite 110, Ann Arbor, MI 48103, or to the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan at nkfm.org.
