Ron Manus graduated to heaven on the 27th of March, 2026, at the age of 94.

He and his wife Phyllis dedicated their lives to translating the Word of God into the language of the Urarina, an indigenous people who live in the Amazon rain forest in northern Peru.

Ron was born and raised in West Orange, New Jersey. As a teenager, he became a successful bicycle racer, earning the title of New Jersey Junior State Champion. He also became a believer and follower of Jesus Christ.

Ron was selected to train for the Olympics but decided instead to prepare to serve God. After studying on a delayed enlistment at Bloomfield College, he was drafted into the army. While stationed at Fort Carson in Colorado Springs, Ron met Phyllis Wright. Ron and Phyllis were married on February 4th, 1956, while he was still serving.

After his discharge, Ron and Phyllis went to Mexico City, where they were involved in leadership with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship at the University of Mexico. While in Mexico, Ron became friends with John Beekman of Wycliffe Bible Translators, which led to Ron and Phyllis joining that organization.

In 1959, the Manus family, now with a daughter and a son, moved to Lima, Peru to continue their study of Spanish. The next year they made contact with the Urarina, an Amazonian tribal group living in little villages along small jungle rivers. That contact began their life-long work of translating the Bible into the Urarina language, which is unrelated to any other language on earth and had never been written down.

After many years of dedicated work, the Urarina New Testament was completed and printed in 2007. By God’s grace, this translation, along with the work of other missionaries, has resulted in a growing Urarina church. Now, Urarina missionaries are themselves taking God’s message to their own communities, and also to other jungle tribes.

Ron also saw the need for Peruvian nationals to be empowered to participate in mission work. To this end, he started an NGO called Su Camino, which means His Path, or His Way, to enable local Peruvians, including Andean and Amazonian tribal believers in carrying out their vision for kingdom work.

The week before Ron’s passing, as a last milestone to his life’s work, a much-awaited third printing of the Urarina Bible was delivered. The church had run out of Bibles to supply to the people and was anxiously awaiting the new batch, which includes Genesis and Exodus in addition to the New Testament.

Ron was a pioneer, whose innovations included using solar-powered computers in Bible translation, organizing the production of the Jesus film in several tribal languages, empowering tribal missionaries and training mother-tongue Bible translators.

Wherever he lived, Ron was known and loved for his hospitality, friendship, singing and generosity.

Ron was preceded to heaven by his wife, Phyllis, who passed away in 2016. He is survived by his brother Richard (Gloria), his daughter Rebecca Pinto (Carlos), son George (Mercedes), son Jerome (Kathleen), and daughter Tacy Spyker (Brian). He is survived by 8 grandchildren: Susana (Andrew), Andres (Thu), Brenda, Karen (Frank), Marco, Ethan (Laura), Emma (Chad), and Judah. He is also survived by 11 great-grandchildren: Calvin, Owen, Willy, Vivi, Joselyn, Gisel, Rickie, Frankie, Abner, Boaz, and Charity.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff of Sunset Manor and the Corewell Health Hospice & Palliative Care team (Angie, Esther, Roberta, Holly, Ruz and Amelia) for their care for Ron during his last months of life.

Ronald (Ramón) Manus partió en paz al cielo el 27 de marzo de 2026, a la edad de 94 años.

Él y su esposa Phyllis dedicaron sus vidas a desarrollar un sistema de escritura para el pueblo Urarina y a traducir la Biblia a este idioma. Los Urarina viven en una zona extremadamente aislada y pantanosa de la selva amazónica en el norte del Perú.

El nació y creció en West Orange, Nueva Jersey, Estados Unidos. Ramón llegó a ser un exitoso ciclista en competencias durante su adolescencia . Fue entonces cuando también se convirtió en creyente y seguidor de Jesucristo. Luego, de estudiar en Bloomfield College, Ramón ingresó al ejército. Mientras estaba desplegado en el centro militar de Fort Carson en Colorado Springs conoció a Phyllis Wright. Ron y Phyllis se casaron el 4 de febrero de 1956, mientras Ramón aún estaba en el ejército.

Después de salir del ejército, Ramón y Phyllis fueron a la Ciudad de México, donde estudiaron en la Universidad de México y ministraron con IFES (un ministerio cristiano universitario). Pero John Beekman, un traductor de la Biblia de Wycliffe/ILV le pidió a Ramón que hiciera un viaje con él a una aldea indígena Chol. Posteriormente Ramón y Phyllis decidieron cambiar su enfoque del ministerio universitario urbano para dedicarse a la traducción bíblica entre un pueblo indigena.

En 1959, los Manus, ahora con una hija y un hijo, se trasladaron a Lima, Perú y estudiaron el idioma español. Luego establecieron contacto con los Urarina, un grupo tribal cuya lengua no está relacionada con ningún otro idioma en la tierra y que nunca había sido escrito. Aquello dió inicio a una relación fraterna con ellos. Ramón capacitó en la traducción bíblica a un grupo de jóvenes Urarinas y trabajó con ellos para realizar una traducción en el idioma Urarina hecha por personas que el Urarina era su idioma materno.

El tener la Palabra de Dios en Urarina, junto con el trabajo de otros misioneros, por la gracia y obra de Dios, ha dado como resultado una iglesia Urarina en crecimiento. Ahora hay misioneros Urarinas que llevan el mensaje de Dios a otras comunidades de su grupo, así como a otras tribus de la selva.

Como último hito de su obra de vida, la semana previa al fallecimiento de Ramón, una tercera impresión muy esperada de la Biblia en Urarina llegó para ser distribuida. La nueva edición incluye a los libros de Génesis y Éxodo.

Ramón Manus fue un pionero, cuyas innovaciones incluyeron el uso y mantenimiento de computadoras alimentadas por energía solar en el remoto río Chambira. También creó a Su Camino (una ONG) cuyo propósito ha sido ayudar a peruanos (mestizos e indígenas) a desarrollar sus propias visiones para el reino de Dios. Por medio de Su Camino varios ministerios peruanos, la mayoría en la sierra andina, han logrado la legalización gubernamental necesaria para sus fines operativos. Con muchas dificultades y la ayuda del Señor estableció y mantuvo en funcionamiento una escuela secundaria por extensión en la ciudad de Iquitos para que los Urarinas pudieran obtener la certificación necesaria para ser nombrados como maestros bilingües en sus comunidades. Esto fue crucial para que la tribu no perdiera el uso de su idioma.

Dondequiera que vivió, Ramón fue conocido y querido por su hospitalidad, amistad y generosidad.

A Ramón le sobreviven su hermano Richard (Gloria), su hija Rebecca Pinto (Carlos), su hijo George (Mercedes), su hijo Jerome (Kathleen) y su hija Teresa Spyker (Brian), así como ocho nietos y once bisnietos.
