Richard Herroon

December 29, 1943 — October 3, 2012

Richard Elmer "Dick" Herroon, age 68, of Greenville, lost his battle with lung cancer on Tuesday afternoon, October 2, 2012 while at home surrounded by his loving family and under the care of Jodi & Amy from Hospice of Michigan. Richard, the son of Raymond J. & Viola (Barringer) Herroon, was born on December 29, 1943 in Toledo, Ohio. He graduated from Greenville Senior High School in 1962 -- the first class to graduate from the "new" high school -- which celebrated their 50th class reunion this past June. A veteran of the Vietnam War, he served in the U.S. Air Force from 1963-1967 and then worked as a machinist for Auto-Die of Grand Rapids until he was injured on the job. Dick as a adamant fisherman, loved camping and working with wood. He took pride in his work... especially when he made walnut cabinets for his best friends, Robert & Jennie Hilliker, and course, for his own home. He was preceded in death by his son, Todd M. Edwards Herroon in 1999; his brother, Frank J. Herroon in 2002; and his father, Raymond J. Herroon in 2005. Richard is survived by his wife, Gloria J. (Edwards) Herroon, whom he married on December 5, 1970 at the Greenville United Methodist Church., along with their sons, Troy Edwards & Marda Townsend, and Jason Herroon, all of Greenville. Richard was grateful to his sons for blessing him with four surviving grandsons, Tyler Edwards of Greenville, Dallas, Collin, & Jayden Herroon, all of Sand Lake; and one great grandson, Traylen Edwards. He was very proud of them all and encouraged them to follow their dreams and pursue their own goals. He found great satisfaction teaching his grandson's a few licks on the guitar. Also surviving are his mother, Viola Herroon of Greenville; his siblings, Violet Cross of Edmore, Ethel & Dan Degood, Barbara & Dennis Day, and Ray "Butch" & Virginia Herroon, all of Greenville; his father-in-law, Donald Edwards of Greenville; along with his siblings-in-law and several nieces and nephews.
