Richard Ferguson

Richard Charles "Fergy" Ferguson, age 91, formerly of Grandville, passed away November 14, 2020 at Spectrum Health-United Hospital in Greenville. The son of Virgil & Athene (Barkenbus) Ferguson, he was born on February 16, 1929 in Grand Rapids. A proud veteran of the Korean War, Richard served with the United States Marine Corps and retired from the Kent County Sherriff's Department as an animal control officer. On May 8, 1948, at Wallin Congregational Church, he married Eileen V. Henry and together they raised one daughter and enjoyed nearly 68 years of marriage until Eileen passed away on February 27, 2016. He was also preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law, Charles Stephens; a sister, Bonnie Martin; and three brothers, James Ferguson, Donald Ferguson, and Gary Ferguson. Surviving are his daughter, Sally Stephens of Greenville; two grandsons, Michael & Catrice Flynn of Spring Lake, and Ryan Flynn of Holland; four step-grandchildren, Christine & Scott Kreiger of Grand Rapids, Kathryn Barr of Arizona, Mike Stephens of Greenville, and Amy & Brian Collins of Caledonia; three great grandchildren, Grace, Madelyn, and Nolan Flynn, all at home; a sister-in-law, Donna Terpstra; and many nieces and nephews. Graveside committal services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 17, 2022 at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, 2894 Patterson Avenue S.E. at 28th Street S.E., Grand Rapids, with the Rev. Father Michael F. Cilibraise officiating. Military honors, rendered by the Kent County Veterans Honor Guard and the U.S. Marine Corps, will conclude the ceremonies.
