Richard Bertrand

January 17, 1933 — May 30, 2025

Richard Victor Bertrand, age 92, of West Olive, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 30, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of character, curiosity, and compassion that will echo through generations. Born in Philadelphia, PA, to Joseph and Arietta Bertrand on January 17, 1933, Richard lived a life as vibrant as the model airplanes he built and flew with such love and precision. He proudly served in the U.S. Air Force, a chapter that deepened his lifelong love of aviation. A respected businessman and devoted entrepreneur, Richard founded Consejeros R.V. Bertrand, an executive placement company where he built more than careers—he built trust throughout Central America. He was also the owner of Hobby City, a haven for fellow hobbyists in Guatemala City, and, alongside his beloved wife, Solveig Ness Kinderman, they shared the joys and challenges of their Amway business. Their marriage, a true fairy tale, was the heart of his world. He was never far from a new project or pursuit. Free flight airplanes—crafted by his own hands—filled his days with wonder. He was an avid participant in the American Free Flight Society and loved nothing more than launching his aircraft into the sky. (Thermals) At home, he was a formidable opponent at the Monopoly or chess board, always with a scotch and bowl of potato chips in-hand. Victories were frequent, gloating was inevitable, and laughter was guaranteed—especially when his children and grandchildren tried (and usually failed) to outsmart him. Richard cherished his adventures across the globe, especially those shared with Solveig. Their trip to Paris stood out among many unforgettable memories together, often bringing him comfort and his signature smile. Richard was deeply involved in the Spiritual teaching and practice known as A Course in Miracles, which promotes Peace, Love, and Advanced Forgiveness. He understood these principles quite thoroughly. He was a fierce friend and a wise and steady father, giving generously of his time and energy, always eager to lend a hand, a listening ear, or a thoughtful word. Richard is survived by his children; Marianne Poynter, Gregory Bertrand, Lisa Hamstra, and Mark Bertrand; grandchildren, Robbie, Solveig, Ashley, Melannie, Phillip, Joseph, Ernest Richard, Shawn, Andrea, Travis, Marylena, Jorge, Daniel, and David; his brother, Allan Bertrand; many great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and countless friends whose lives he touched deeply. He now joins his beloved Solveig, who preceded him in death, in a well-earned rest embraced by the love that defined his life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the National Free Flight Society, a nonprofit organization that honors one of his greatest passions. Richard's was a life lived with purpose, humor, and most of all, love. He truly was an unforgettable character whose influence and legacy will continue to soar.
