Philip Francis Cousar Sr. born May 8, 1931 in Nogales, AZ, passed away peacefully on May 3, 2025, in Grand Rapids, MI, where he made his home. Philip is survived by his significant other, Lois Alexander, his son, Philip Cousar, Jr. of Sand Lake, MI, his daughter Teresa Anne Cousar Klaynik of Saugatuck, MI and by seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Bessie Tompkins Cousar and his brothers Robert Moore Cousar, Jr. and Charles Raymond Cousar. Phil graduated from UCLA with a BS degree, Honors in Accounting in 1959. He earned a Masters of Administration from University of Hawaii in 1974. Known for his financial skills, Phil was a respected Financial Manager in the manufacturing sector, where he worked tirelessly until he retired. Phil was a devoted member of Grand Rapids Grace Episcopal Church, previously serving on the vestry. His faith was a cornerstone of his life, guiding him in his actions and decisions. An avid bridge player, he was well known at the Bridge Club of Grand Rapids, where he also directed games. Outside of his work and church life, Philip was a zealous traveler. He explored the world, often by cruise, adding stamps to his passport and memories to his heart. Always game for an adventure, in his later years he explored the bike trails of western Michigan with his recumbent trike. He amazed people by riding over 3500 miles in his nineties. Phil dedicated countless hours to volunteering as a transporter at the Blodgett Memorial Hospital, and driver for both the Red Cross and the Kentwood police department. He touched countless lives through his service, leaving behind a legacy of compassion and dedication. As we mourn Philip's passing, we also celebrate his well-lived life. Memorials contributions may be made to the Raymond Charles Campbell Scholarship at UC Berkeley . This scholarship was established by Phil to honor his uncle Lt. Campbell who was killed in action in France during WWI while serving as a US Army Artillery officer. Debit/credit card gifts are accepted by phone at 510-643-9789.
