He grew up in Birmingham, England during the blitz of WWII which gave him an adapt and carry on, no matter what, attitude he carried throughout his life. He retired in 1995 and emigrated to Plainwell, Michigan, USA to be nearer his children and grandchildren. He continued to work with his son building houses and continued his daughter's education, as he instructed her on house maintenance and the use of his well-equipped work shop. He also took pleasure traveling to watch his grandchildren at various sports & school activities.
He had many and varied hobbies throughout his life including gardening, breeding tropical fish, refurbishing and navigating boats, cross stitch, jigsaw puzzles and at the age of 85 completed his first Lego project.
He was preceded in death by his father, mother, and sister, June Smart. He is survived and will be sadly missed by his wife of 62 years, Hazel; daughter, Debra (James) Thorp; son, Michael (Ginny); grandchildren, Sebastian and Alec Fryer, Brianna, Caitie and Megan Thorp; brother-in-law, Tony; and ex-daughter-in-law, Pamela.
