Nancy I. Caswell, age 82, of Sheridan, passed away Monday, November 14, 2016 at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing. The daughter of Rosendo & Mary (Lacno) Olayer, she was born on June 10, 1934 in Kailua, Hawaii.
A proud veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, Nancy continued her career in public service working for various Federal agencies until her retirement. On July 23, 1958, in Hawaii, she married Richard J. Caswell who was serving with the U.S. Navy.
Nancy was a member of St. George Catholic Church and enjoyed reading, playing Scrabble, working on puzzles, learning about her family genealogy, collecting stamps, star gazing, spending time with family and friends, and watching her children and grandchildren grow.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard J. Caswell on December 26, 2009; her parents; brothers, Patrick Olayer, Ronald Olayer, and George Charbonneau; a son, Thomas Giltner; and a step-son, Randy Helmer.
Surviving are six children, Jan Caswell of Hawaii, Rina & Mark Bunting of Ionia, Richard Jon & Linda Caswell of Greenville, Rae Ehle of Sheridan, Rollin Caswell of Sheridan, and Nancy Anne Caswell of Sheridan; her brothers and sisters, Rosendo Olayer Jr., Claudia Kidder, Veronica (Verna) DeGregorio, Valerie Collins, Michele Charbonneau, Matthew Charbonneau, and Mary Charbonneau; fourteen grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; and many, many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.
The Mass of Christian Burial for Nancy will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 19th at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, 434 High Street, Ionia, with Rev. Father Thomas J. Brown presiding. Honoring Nancy's wishes, cremation has taken place and burial, with full military honors, will take place at The National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu, Hawaii.
