Murl Jay Zalud, 64, beloved husband and father, peacefully passed away on Sunday, January 29, 2017, in Grand Rapids, following a prolonged illness. Murl was born on January 29, 1953 in Grand Rapids, to parents, William and Bonita Zalud. In 1976, he married the love of his life, Sharon Blanton, and together they raised two sons Brian and Bradley. He graduated from Ferris State University in 1976 with a degree in Criminal Justice. In 1985, he accepted a position as a corrections officer for the State of Michigan, where he worked for more than 28 years. In his free time, he enjoyed deer hunting with his family on their property in Northern Michigan. He had a passion for motorcycles and a passion for long Sunday rides. More than anything, he loved his family and enjoyed spending quality time with his sons. His daughter-in-laws added great joy to his life. A unique soul, Murl was very funny and enjoyed playing practical jokes on friends, family, and the caretakers at Porter Hills Nursing Home. He was known as being very gentle and kind and always willing to help others. He will be greatly missed. He is preceded in death by his parents, William and Bonita Zalud of Grand Rapids. Murl is survived by his wife, Sharon Zalud, of Grand Rapids; his sons, Brian (Annmarie) Zalud of Owosso, and Brad (Kristen) Zalud of Jacksonville, FL. He is also survived by his brothers, Marv (Sheri) Zalud, and Wayne (Carolyn) Zalud; sisters, Julie (Jim) Houston, and Charla Zalud Thomas, sister and brother-in-laws Gregory (Sandra) Bohn, Roger (Raynell) Blanton; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Memorial services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 2, 2017 at Porter Hills Nursing Home, 3600 Fulton St. E., Grand Rapids, with a visitation one hour prior to the service. A luncheon will take place after the service, and all are welcome to attend and celebrate Murl's life.
