Mrs. Mildred Belle Sturgis, of Greenville, passed away on her 93rd birthday, Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2009 at Spectrum Health United Memorial-United Hospital, Greenville.
The daughter of Jess & Lula Sperry, she was born on Feb. 10, 1916 in Fowler. After graduating high school, she married George Benjamin Sturgis on March 24, 1934 in St. Johns.
Together, they raised five children, were blessed with over 74 years of marriage, and were members of the East Congregation of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovahs Witnesses in Greenville.
Mildred will be remembered as a skilled seamstress, having made clothing for herself and family and even reupholstering furniture. She also enjoyed gardening and mowing the lawn, but her greatest love was her God, Jehovah, and her work for His ministry.
One of her favorite verses of Scripture was Revelations 21; 3-4 With that I heard a loud voice from the throne say: Look! The tent of God is with mankind, and he will reside with them, and they will be his peoples. And God himself will be with them. And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.
She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant daughter, Martha Sturgis; a sister, Pearl Blow; and a brother, Jesse Sperry.
Surviving are her loving husband of nearly 75 years, George B. Sturgis of Greenville; their children, Martella & Joseph Greenwood of Greenville, Carolyn & Paul Maue of Taylor, Texas, Eunice & Ronald Rondeau of Swartz Creek, Lois Martinez of Greenville, and Timothy Sturgis of Lansing; five grandchildren, Jonathan Greenwood, Joanna Willison, Suzette Regina, Stephen Rondeau, and Abigail Baragrey; six great grandchildren (with the seventh due any day); four nieces; and numerous close friends.
Memorial services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 14, 2009 at the Greenville Kingdom Hall of Jehovahs Witnesses, 915 Industrial Park Drive at M-57 East.
Honoring her wishes, cremation has taken place and burial will be in St. Johns at a later date. Contributions in Mildreds memory may be directed to the Kingdom Hall of Jehovahs Witnesses-East Congregation.
The Brown-Teman & Christiansen Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Greenville, is serving the family.
