Marie Liedel

Mrs. Marie Ann Liedel, age 98, formerly of Greenville, LaSalle, and Monroe, passed away Thursday morning, Sept. 2, 2010 at St. Anns Home in Grand Rapids where she had resided the past three years. The daughter of John & Catherine (Supp) Malik, she was born on August 18, 1912 in Elsie. On Oct. 24, 1940, at St. Michaels Parish in Monroe, she married Herman Joseph Liedel and together they enjoyed 60 years of marriage and raised five children. A woman of strong faith, Marie had a great love for the Lord which she passed on to her family and all she met. She was a member of St. Charles Catholic Parish in Greenville for the past decade and previously had been an active member at St. John the Baptist Parish in Monroe, volunteering in a number of capacities in the church and school, as well as serving on the Altar society. In addition, she was a member of the auxiliary of the LaSalle Township Fire Department where her husband served as Fire Chief. The consummate hostess, Marie delighted in entertaining family and friends with dinners, picnics, and backyard cookouts. She will be fondly remembered for her homemaking talents gardening, cooking, canning, and especially baking. Each Christmas she literally baked hundreds of Holiday cookies for her extended family and friends and neighbors. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Herman Joseph Liedel; a sister, Catherine Beitler; and three brothers, John, Joseph, and Fritz Malik. Surviving are her children, Sharon Zammit of Detroit, Suzanne & Michael Doherty of Greenville, Ronald & Betty Liedel of Hunstville, Alabama, Frank & Bonnie Liedel of Harbor Springs, and Mary & Robert Fisher of Monrovia, California; nineteen grandchildren; and forty-one great grandchildren. She will be truly missed by her family, as well as her many friends as St. Ann's Home. Visitation is Monday from 6-8 p.m. at the Christiansen Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 511 S. Franklin Street, Greenville, where the Rosary will be prayed at 8:00 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday at St. Charles Catholic Church, Greenville, with the Rev. Father Phil Salmonowicz as celebrant. Rite of Committal will be at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Monroe with the Rev. Father William Fisher presiding. In lieu of flowers, the family suggestions contributions to Marie's memory to either St. Ann's Home, InHome Hospice, or Michigan Right to Life.
