Margaret Detwiler

July 21, 1913 — December 17, 2005

Margaret H. Detwiler, age 92, of Trufant, formerly of Baldwin and Lansing, passed away Saturday morning, Dec. 17, 2005 at home under the loving care of her family and Hospice. The daughter of Ralph J. & Alice E. (Green) Peters, she was born on July 21, 1913 in Lansing. Margaret delighted in being a part of the Foster Grandparent Program for 10 years, and was nominated for the Governors Volunteer of the Year award. She also took active roles in the MARC (Minority Access to Research Careers) Program, Habitat for Humanity, and the Montcalm County Commission on Aging. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth A. Austin, in 1965; a daughter, Alice E. Leonard in 2003; a grandson Ernest Paul Austin in 2001; and a sister, Betty Jane Godby in 2002. Surviving are two sons, Kenneth R. Austin of Amsterdam, Netherlands, and John M. & Janie Austin of Mason; one daughter, Mary M. & Don Root of Trufant; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great grandchildren. As she requested, her body was donated to Michigan State University School of Anatomy, East Lansing, for the advancement of medical science, teaching, and research. Private family services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Hospice of Michigan.
