Captain Manuel Sanjiau Jr., age 61, of Portage, passed away on September 18, 2012 at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Battle Creek. The son of Manuel and Maria Sanjiau, Manny was born on May 3, 1951 in Havana, Cuba and immigrated to the United States with his parents, Maria Ferbeyre-Sanjiau and Manuel Sanjiau-Se+-oran in 1960. Manny settled in Virginia with his family and completed High School there. He completed his nursing degree at Florida International University in Miami. A proud veteran of the United States Air Force, Capt. Sanjiau served his country during the Vietnam War and completed two tours of duty... first as a corpsman and then as a nurse. Most of his career outside the military was spent as a nurse within the mental health field. Manny was an excellent musician and guitar was his specialty. He often entertained friends and family with his gifted talents. He was an avid naturalist and found joy in sharing. Manny is survived by his partner, Sue DeNise, and her children Rick and Caitlin DeNise of California, and many dear friends. The family requests that donations be made to Wounded Warrior Project (woundedwarriorproject.org) in lieu of flowers. Graveside commital services, with full military honors, are at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, September 24, 2012 at Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta.
