It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Louis Raymond Ecker, affectionately known as Louie, on December 9, 2023. Born on July 24, 1938, in Petoskey, Michigan, Louis lived a life filled with hard work, family, and dedication to his passions. As Albert Einstein once said, "It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge.” Louis, in his own way, was a teacher who woke joy in those around him through his zest for life and dedication to his craft. Louis spent most of his life in Michigan, moving from his birthplace in Petoskey to Boyne Falls, and finally settling down in Luther. He was a proud Michigander, whose love for the outdoors was evident in his choice of profession and hobbies. Louis was a proud veteran of the United States Navy, having served aboard the U.S.S. Pocono during the Korean War era. He worked tirelessly as a Heavy Equipment Operator in the forestry industry, a job that allowed him to combine his love for machinery and nature. Even in his leisure time, Louis was drawn to the outdoors, his favorite pastime being fishing. He was a master angler who could tell you about every species of fish in the state's waters. Louis is survived by his loving children, Clyde Ecker, Susan Ecker, Kathy Moore, and Eileen Sarver, who were the light of his life. He was a rock and a source of inspiration to them, and his love and wisdom will be greatly missed. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde & Mary Ecker; and his brothers Ronald Ecker, Larry Ecker, and Ted Ecker. Louis was a beloved father, brother, and friend, and his memory will be cherished by all who knew him. As poet Maya Angelou once said, "People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel."
