Lorna M. Helfer-Martin, aged 90, passed away Monday, Nov. 20, 2006 at Masonic Pathways in Alma. The daughter of Byron Lewis & Flora Etta (Watson) Odle, she was born on May 6, 1916 in Onaway. After completing high school, Lorna went on to earn her nursing degree from the Hurley Hospital School of Nursing in Flint. She worked as a registered nurse at the former Smith Memorial Hospital in Alma, and later at Gratiot Community Hospital, retiring as night supervisor in 1978.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and two husbands, Leland Harold Helfer Sr. on Nov. 12, 1982, and Houghton James Martin on Jan. 1, 1999.
Surviving are her two children, Leland & Delores Helfer of Alma, and Nancy & Gene LaCroix, Jr. of Jenison; six grandchildren, LaDawn (Scott) Showers, Tony (Pam) Helfer, Jonathan LaCroix, Amy LaCroix, Eugene (Kelly) LaCroix III, Cara LaCroix; seven great grandchildren, Blake & Blair Showers, Lance Helfer, Damian, Devin, Brayden, and Justin LaCroix; a sister, Bonnie Mattern of Leesburg, Florida; a sister-in-law, Doris Helfer of Utah; and several nieces and nephews.
