Lois Bader

Dr. Lois Bader, Born November 24, 1933, passed peacefully in her East Lansing home on April 27th, 2022. Born to Edward Burns and Nell Burns (Gartland) in Charleroi, Pennsylvania, a rural mining town, she became a true pillar of our community. Dr. Bader is predeceased by her first husband, Peter Crockett, her second husband Thomas Bader and third husband, Dr. John Chapman, Ph.D.. Lois is survived by her three sons; Scott Bader; Geoffrey Bader, M.D. (Nancy Bader), and Gregory Crockett, J.D., (Elahe Crockett Ph.D.). Her grandchildren; Alexander Crockett (Hillary), Sarah Crockett, Geoffrey Bader, Jr. (Kristen), Will Bader (Katheryn), and Mason Bader. Great-grandchildren; Avary Woods, Owen Crockett, Isla Crockett, Elizabeth Bader, William-Jackson Bader and Lilly Bader. Lois is also survived by her sister Vivian Poynter and nieces, Janet Toulios and Diane Wainwright Lois earned her Ph.D. at the University of Maryland prior to accepting a professorship at MSU's College of Education, in which she had a long and prestigious career, as a Distinguished Professor. Dr. Bader dedicated herself to providing the gift of literacy and language to people in need. She served as the unpaid founder and Executive Director of the Capital Area Literacy Coalition (CALC) beginning in 1987. Dr. Bader created programs for our communities and abroad to promote both literacy and education. Dr. Bader's numerous awards include: CASE Professor of the Year, the ALER Research and Scholarship Award, a lifetime acknowledgement as part of Michigan's Women's Hall of Fame, and awards for her work from governors and legislators of all parties. Dr. Bader additionally authored many books and articles, including Read to Succeed and the Bader Reading and Language Inventory, which continues to be a standard in the field of literacy. Dr. Bader created, literacy and educational programs including; Basic Literacy and Communication for the U.S. Marine Corps in Asia; Vocational and Workplace Literacy for the U.S. Army in Europe; and grass roots literacy programs in Liberia and the Philippines. She has been an instructor, consultant, and speaker on English as a second language, curriculum development, literacy and learning disabilities across the world including Japan, Honduras, Germany, Taiwan, Australia, Thailand, Korea, Liberia, Switzerland, Okinawa, Egypt, Malaysia, Philippine Islands, Hong Kong, and Singapore. In a way, we are all her children. A quote she always kept nearby spoke to how making a difference in the life of a child is what truly gives one's own life meaning.
