We are saddened to announce the passing of Linda Mary Carey, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend who left us on January 9, 2024. Linda, born in Flint, Michigan on September 28, 1934, was a woman of strength, warmth, and an ever-present wry sense of humor that brought joy to all who knew her. As George Bernard Shaw once said, "Life does not cease to be funny when people die any more than it ceases to be serious when people laugh." Linda embodied this spirit, living her life with sincerity and laughter, making every moment count.
Linda was a woman of many passions. She was an accomplished bridge player, a testament to her sharp mind and competitive spirit. Her culinary prowess was renowned, with her kitchen being the heart of her home. Every dish she prepared was a work of love and an expression of her care for those around her. But of all her hobbies, none could rival her love for the University of Michigan football. She proudly cheered for her team through the seasons, her spirit undimmed even in their lean times. Her loyalty was rewarded in 2024, when she heard they won the National Championship. As Bear Bryant once said, "It’s not the will to win that matters—everyone has that. It’s the will to prepare to win that matters." Linda’s unwavering support for U of M football was a testament to this, and her passion was infectious, creating a lasting legacy among her family and friends.
But above all, what mattered most to Linda was her family. She was a devoted wife to her late husband William, whom she married on January 8, 1955, and their love story is one that continues to inspire. She was a loving mother to Annette, David, and Thomas, and a doting grandmother to Richard, Jeffrey, and Troy. She was incredibly proud of her great-granddaughter, Reagan, who brought her much joy. Linda is survived by her children, grandchildren, and great-granddaughter. She is preceded in death by her husband William, her father Samuel Piffer, her mother Hilda Darnton, and her sister Margaret Leary. Linda was a pillar of strength, and her love and resilience will forever be a beacon for her family.
Per her wishes cremation has taken place and she will be buried with William at Fort Custer National Cemetery.
Please join us in celebrating Linda's life by sharing your memories and photos on the memorial page. This is an opportunity for all who knew Linda to remember her vibrancy, her warmth, and her love for life.
