Lillian Clary-Welti

January 29, 1941 — March 24, 2024

With hearts full of love and memories, we celebrate the life of Lillian Clary-Welti. Born in Glasgow, Kentucky on January 29, 1941, to her late parents, Jasper and Nina Thomas, Lillian lived in Baldwin, Michigan, making a significant impact on her community and the people she met. As Jane Austen once wrote, "There is a stubbornness about me that never can bear to be frightened at the will of others. My courage always rises at every attempt to intimidate me." Lillian embodied this spirit of overcoming, her courage shining brightly in all aspects of her life. Lillian, affectionately known as 'Lil' by her loved ones, was a dedicated worker at the MDHHS / State of Michigan, where she provided administrative support until her retirement. Her work ethic, intelligence, and dedication made her a cherished and respected figure. Yet, it was outside of her professional life where Lillian truly came alive. She was a passionate volunteer within Lake County, giving her time generously to the Salvation Army and Christmas program. Her love for wine tasting and ladies' nights brought her immense joy and created countless fond memories for her and her friends. Above all, Lillian's love for her family was unparalleled. She was the proud and loving mother of Jennifer Clary, Anita 'Nikki' Clary-Martinez, and Amy Leonard. Her love extended to her sons-in-law, Joe Martinez and Steven Leonard. She was a doting grandmother to Alexandra, Ciera, Cameron, Jillian, Brendan, and Logan, and a loving great-grandmother. Lillian also leaves behind her sister, Marion Tolly. She was preceded in death by her husband, Nicholas Welti; her parents; and her siblings, Wanda Morehead, Wallace Thomas, and Douglas Thomas. Ralph Waldo Emerson once penned, "To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know that even one life has breathed easier because you have lived - that is to have succeeded." By this measure, Lillian was a resounding success. Her resilient spirit, smart mind, and charismatic presence will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. We invite you to share your memories of Lillian 'Lil' Clary-Welti and upload photos to the memorial page, allowing us to celebrate her life together, even as we part ways in this world. Per Lil's wishes cremation has taken place and no formal services will be held at this time.
