Lanny Vaughn Carr, age 74, of Greenville, passed away, due to complications following a heart attack, late Thursday evening, November 4, 2021 at Spectrum Health-Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids. The son of Gerald Lavere & Vera Mae (Steele), he was born on April 24, 1947 in Ionia.
A veteran of the Vietnam War, Lanny served as a Aviation Machinists Mate, Petty Officer 3rd Class, with the United States Navy and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and a Navy Unit Commendation. He began his career with Chrysler Motor Company, in the early 1970's. He eventually relocated to California to work for Raytheon (formerly General Dynamics) as a missile systems engineer technician, retiring after 27 years of service. Upon his retirement, Lanny relocated back to his home state of Michigan to be closer to his family.
On July 24, 2009, he married Denise Lillian (Durham) Hester and together they enjoyed shuffleboard and visiting with friends at the Moose Lodge in Greenville.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gerald and Vera, his sister, Judy Reid, and his brother, Chandler Carr.
Surviving are his wife, Denise Carr of Greenville; his daughters, Anita (James) Mantey of Greenville, and Brenda (Marc) Guerne of Ankeny, Iowa; step-children, Jessica (David) Tysman of Grand Haven, Hannah Farmer of Eustace, Texas, and Joseph Hester of Greenville; grandchildren Nathan (Danielle) Booms of East Lansing, Mitchell Booms of Harbor Beach, Maxwell (Jacki) Booms of Loveland, Colorado, Jordan Guerne and Vicki Guerne, both of Ankeny, Iowa, Maggie and Amelia Tysman of Grand Haven, Caedon, Wyatt, and Addison Farmer, all of Eustace, Texas, and Lily and Johnny Hester of Greenville; two great-grandchildren, Zoey and Lydia Booms of East Lansing; brothers, Merle (Sandra) Carr of Folsom, California, Gary (Rebecca) Carr of Walnut Creek, California, , Darryl (Mary Jo) Carr of Dexter, Darwin (Lola) Carr of Buffalo, New York, and Nelson (Bonnie) Carr of Caledonia; and several nieces and nephews.
Family and friends celebrated Lanny's life from 2-5 p.m. on Saturday, November 20, 2021 at the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge, 5649 S. Greenville Road (M-91), Greenville. As Lanny wished, his body has been donated to Michigan State University for the advancement of medical science and teaching. Following cremation, he will be laid to rest at Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta, Michigan.
Committal services, with military honors, are at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, June 17, 2024 at Fort Custer National Cemetery, 15501 Dickman Road, Augusta, Michigan.
