Kim Sarahjane Mitchell, 69, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, passed away Saturday, September 21, 2024 at Corewell Health-Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids. One of five children of Edward F. and Lorraine (Jung) Kittrell, Kim was born on November 19, 1954, in Geneseo, Illinois, where her father owned and operated Kittrell Chevrolet & Oldsmobile. She attended Geneseo’s St. Malachy grade school and J. D. Darnall Senior High School, graduating in 1972. She was in the first undergraduate class of women admitted to the University of Notre Dame, graduating in 1976. She received her law degree from the University of Michigan in 1979 and married Gary Mitchell that summer. They later divorced. She moved to Grand Rapids in 1987 to join the Amway Corporation in Ada, Michigan, where she was a corporate attorney until she retired in 2012 as a vice president. Kim loved the law, and she also loved music. She was very active in the St. Cecilia Music Center and the Girls Choral Academy in Grand Rapids, as well as other charities. She was a lifelong fan of the Chicago White Sox. Kim was preceded in death by her parents; and her sister Catherine (Richard) Stone, of Geneseo. She is survived by her brother Ed (Jean) Kittrell, of Glenview, Illinois; her sisters Alison (Mark) Gaynor of Iowa City, Iowa, and Dr. Tracy Kittrell, D.D.S., of Solon, Iowa; and her brother-in-law Richard Stone of Geneseo. She also leaves nephews John (Heather Nicole) Stone of Los Alamos, N.M., Casey (Kristine) Kittrell of Austin, Texas, George (Kirsten) Stone of Vienna, Virginia, James (Jen) Kittrell, of Chicago, Andrew (Carrie) Kittrell of Palatine, Illinois, and Michael (Katie) Gaynor of Highland Park, Illinois; nieces Lorraine (Steve Nordlund) Gaynor of Iowa City, Iowa, Karen (James) Davis of Geneseo, and Sophie (Jay) Gillett of Coralville, Iowa; as well as several grandnieces and grandnephews; many friends; and Sam the cat. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Geneseo. Instead of flowers, Kim would have appreciated contributions in her memory to St. Cecelia Music Center in Grand Rapids or the University of Notre Dame in Notre Dame, Indiana.
