Kathleen Ann (Slotsema) Spoelman, age 72, of Holland, Michigan passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, December 30, 2020. She was born November 9, 1948, in Grand Rapids, to the late Anderson and Rachel (Lambers) Slotsema.
Survivors include her husband of 52 years, Dennis; children, Lisa (Matthew) Reimink, Karen Woolery, and Timothy (Anne) Spoelman; grandchildren, Anna, Nathanial, and Kathryn Reimink, Raiden Woolery, and Emmajean, Eddison, and Anderson Spoelman; brothers, Mark (Joyce) and Dan (Linda) Slotsema; sisters, Jan (Nick) Kool and Diane (Skip) Sietsema; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Kathy was preceded in death by her parents and son-in-law, Jason Woolery.
Kathleen was first and foremost a child of God and a blessing to all who knew her. Kathleen grew up in a small family home on the southeast side of Grand Rapids where she lived with her parents and four younger siblings. Her siblings describe her as a loving big sister who always took care of them. She graduated from Grand Rapids East Christian High School and went on to obtain a Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education from Calvin College.
After marrying Dennis Mark Spoelman on March 26, 1969, they settled in Holland, MI where Kathleen embraced the role of motherhood. She was a great supporter of her children and proved to be a wonderful example for them. Kathleen was also an excellent athlete and had much success playing competitive softball in town. After the kids moved out, she found much joy in small adventures with Dennis such as fishing trips and long walks. She was very grateful to be able to vacation in Hawaii with him last year. Her grandchildren were also a source of much joy to Kathleen and she often traveled willingly to sit through rainy soccer games, boring baseball doubleheaders, or intense basketball games to cheer on her grandkids. Like many of the Slotsemas, she was a fierce competitor and found much joy in winning various board or card games.
Kathy loved the Lord in a deeply personal, and yet, inspirational way. Upon her cancer diagnosis, she lived in constant communication with God and found comfort in his promises. Her desire was for others to be impacted positively through her attitude and spirit. She served as a great testament to God's will and his love for his children, in spite of difficult circumstances. She will be dearly missed by all who had the chance to call her wife, sister, mother, grandmother, or friend.
Per her wishes cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held Saturday, January 2, 2021. The service can be viewed on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. via Faith Church's Facebook page.
