Joyce Ann Mathews

Joyce Ann Mathews (née Wichner), age 91, passed away peacefully on July 18, 2026, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Born on August 15, 1934, in St. Joseph, Michigan, Joyce lived a long and fulfilling life marked by love, dedication, and kindness.

Joyce graduated from St. Joseph High School in 1953. Shortly after, on June 21 of the same year, she married Giles O. Mathews. Together they shared 56 wonderful years of marriage until his passing on October 12, 2008. Their union was a testament to enduring love and partnership.

Throughout her career, Joyce demonstrated a strong work ethic and commitment to her community. She retired in 2006 as the park manager of Warren Dunes Village in Bridgman, Michigan—a role that reflected for her ability to create welcoming spaces for others.

Family was at the heart of Joyce’s life. She is survived by her daughter Kelley (Stanley) Krzykwa; grandsons Matthew Carlee and Alexander (Kristin) Carlee; and two great-granddaughters, Stella Carlee and Althea Carlee. She is also lovingly remembered by her sister Nancy (Charles) Vanderzwaag and her lifelong friend Julia Beckman. Joyce was preceded in death by her parents Rudy and Marguarite Wichner; her beloved husband Giles; her son David; one brother Donald; and three sisters Violet, Betty, and Bernice.

Joyce will be remembered for her caring spirit and loving smile that brightened the lives of those around her. She found joy in simple pleasures—sharing coffee with family and friends or sending thoughtful cards to mark special occasions. Her warmth and thoughtfulness left an indelible mark on all who knew her.
