Portage

Josh Burns was born on July 8, 1982, and passed away on January 20, 2026.

Josh served his country honorably in the United States Navy as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) technician for eight years. Throughout his military service, he made courageous and often high-risk decisions, consistently rising to the challenges before him. He received multiple decorations and medals for his service and excelled in swimming. Josh approached every responsibility with focus, discipline, and quiet bravery.

Exceptionally intelligent and deeply intuitive, Josh was a thoughtful observer of the world around him. Like his brother Ben, whose life was also taken too soon, Josh possessed a depth and awareness that went far beyond what could be seen on the surface. He carried a strong spiritual sensitivity and was attuned to energy, emotion, and the unspoken — often understanding more than words could express. He listened more than he spoke, noticed what others missed, and carried a calm wisdom that naturally drew people to him.

Josh was trustworthy, loyal, and kind-hearted, with a gentle and compassionate soul. He was a keeper of confidences and a safe presence for those around him — if you trusted him with something, it stayed with him. He lived a full and meaningful life, traveling extensively and calling many places home, leaving lasting connections wherever he went.

Josh shared over twelve years of marriage with his wife, Linsey Kerr. Their bond was deep and enduring, built on love, devotion, and mutual understanding.

Josh faced personal challenges with resilience, meeting them with the same determination that defined his life. He excelled in whatever he committed himself to, and his strength was evident not only in his accomplishments, but in the empathy and care he showed to others.

He is survived by his parents, Phyllis Dowell and Dennis Burns; his sister, Natalie Burns; his loyal companion, Rosie; and many loving aunts and uncles.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Ben Burns; his Aunt Cindy; his cousin, Kyle Whitener; his friend, Anita Mekan; and his grandparents.

Josh will be remembered for his service, insight, loyalty, and the deep love he held for those closest to him. He will be missed beyond words.
