Joseph "Joe" Burgess, 59, of Grand Rapids, died October 22, 2010 with his family by his side. Joe was born August 6, 1951 in Detroit, graduated from Lake Fenton High School, and later received his Bachelor's degree in business from Central Michigan University. Joe was an avid boater, fisherman, and captain of the "Joe Mama." He was preceded in death by his parents Jack & Gloria Burgess. Joe is survived by his wife, Sue; step-daughter Vanessa (Viet) Do, step-son Jeremy Smith; grandson Collin Do; brothers, Danny, Robert, Charlie, and Jim Burgess; sisters, Pam Blum and Sandy Mann; and several nieces, nephews, family, and friends. The family is planning a private memorial, but invites relatives and friends to join them for a celebration of Joe's life held on Saturday, October 30, 2010 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the East Grand Rapids Community Center, 750 Lakeside Drive S.E. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society (www.cancer.org/Involved/Donate/) Arrangements were entrusted to the Michigan Cremation Company.
