John left this earthly life for a new life with the Father, Son and Holy Spirit where he now resides in their light and peace.
He served his country in the Air Corps in New Guinea during WWII after which he graduated from Calvin College and Seminary. For thirty eight years he served in five Christian Reformed churches the last being North Hills Church in Troy Michigan a pastorate that lasted 20 years. He loved being a pastor, preaching sermons and caring for the people in his congregations.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Thelma of thirty eight years; a daughter, Merrie Anne Makowski; and a son, Eric Malestein. Surviving children, John (Barbara) Malestein, Gail (David Bos), Phil (Nancie) Malestein, Steve (Karen) Malestein, and Mark (Elisa) Malestein. His second wife Lavonne of sixteen years also predeceased John with surviving step children, Kevin (Cindy) McGrevey, Shannon (Russell) Ryan, Brett (Janet) McGrevey. John leaves behind 18 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren. He will be sorely missed by his parishioners, friends at Samaritas and Church of the Servant, care givers and friends at Vista Springs Riverside Gardens and his special friend Helen Bonzelaar.
A Service of Remembrance will be held at 11:00 am on June 8, 2022 at Church of the Servant, 3835 Burton St SE, Grand Rapids, followed with fellowship and lunch.
