John Culp

August 31, 1981 — December 10, 2023

John Waylon Culp, an incomparable force of compassion and charisma, was born on August 31, 1981, in Dothan, Alabama. As a child, John's creative spirit and natural talent began to shine, and it would continue to burn brightly throughout his life. A gifted musician and songwriter, John had the unique ability to weave together melodies and lyrics that touched the hearts of all who had the privilege of hearing them. His music was more than a profession; it was a testament to his soul's innate ability to connect with others. As poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow once said, "Music is the universal language of mankind," and John spoke this language fluently. In his personal life, John was known for his charismatic personality and compassionate heart. He had an incredible ability to make everyone around him feel special and loved. His charming nature was infectious, and his friends and family will always remember him for his generosity, kindness, and the way he could light up a room with his presence. John retired from his successful career in the entertainment industry and resided in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where his music continued to inspire and uplift those around him. The echoes of his melodies will continue to resonate in the hearts of his loved ones and fans alike. Despite his many accomplishments, what mattered most to John was not fame or accolades but the ability to touch people's lives with his music. His legacy will forever be remembered as one of the most talented musicians and songwriters to bless this earth. John is survived by his son, Judah Williams of Atlanta, GA; his sister, Sheree Scott (Sam) of Prattville, AL; his brothers, Cody Mayo of Dothan, AL, and Hank Tart of Valdosta, GA; and David Tart. He leaves behind numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews, along with a multitude of special friends. John was preceded in death by his parents, Gloria Kirkland Welch and Delbert Welch of Donalsonville, GA, and Bobby Culp of Abbeville, AL; and his grandparents, Haywood and Inez Kirkland of Headland, AL, and Gordon Tollie Culp Jr and Mavis Messer Culp of Abbeville, AL. In remembering John, we are reminded of a quote by Albert Schweitzer, "In everyone's life, at some time, our inner fire goes out. It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human being. We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit." John was one such person, whose life and music rekindled the spirits of many. We invite you to help keep his memory alive by sharing your own stories, photos, and memories of John on his memorial page.
