John Ray Chase, age 55, of Newaygo, died at home on Friday morning, November 10, 2017 after battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis for the last several months. John Ray Chase, age 55, of Newaygo, died at home on Friday morning, November 10, 2017 after battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis for the last several months. A loving husband and father, John was known as a man who liked to smile, laugh, and make jokes. The son of Clarence & Kathleen (Vincent) Chase, he was born on January 18, 1962 in Grand Rapids. was born on January 18, 1962 in Grand Rapids . He graduated from Godwin High School and graduated from Ferris State College with a welding degree. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1982 and served until 1991, working as an aviation ordnance specialist. His service included deployment in Desert Storm. After his Navy service, he worked as a truck driver. He drove for WalMart for the last 15 years. John was an avid motorcycle rider who made several trips to the huge annual motorcycle rally in Sturgis in the Black Hills of South Dakota. He was especially happy that he was able to make his final trip to Sturgis in August. John Chase and Carrie Mundell were married on Dec. 20, 1998 at Croton Community Church. John was preceded in passing by his parents. Along with his wife, John is survived by his children, Vicky, Bonnie, John and Jesse, all of Newaygo; siblings, Lena Bevens, of Lowell, Bill Chase, of Morley, Larry Chase, of Englewood, Florida, and Missy Chase, of Hesperia; as well as many other family members and many friends. A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are entrusted to Michigan Cremation & Funeral Care, exclusive provider of Veterans Funeral Care.
