John Michael Bedford would want you to know that wherever you're reading this, a hoppy IPA would make it better. John passed away on April 18, 2026, at the age of 67, leaving behind a life that was full, purposeful, and deeply rooted to the people and places he loved.

John spent his career in service to the natural world. He began as a forester and landscaper before joining the Michigan Department of Agriculture, where he became a respected program manager in pest response, dedicating years of expertise to combating the emerald ash borer. His love of nature extended well beyond the office. After retirement, he found a second home behind the bar at Oddside Ales in Grand Haven. It was the perfect fit: good people, hoppy beer, and a reason to show up every day with a smile. He remained an avid cyclist, exploring Michigan's trails and linking up brewery tours with the enthusiasm of someone who truly knew how to enjoy life.

At the center of John's world was his son Taylor. Taylor, a Special Olympics state gold medalist in swimming, was John's everything. Together they were unstoppable, taking bike rides, going swimming, attending musicals and movies, bowling, trying new restaurants, and so much more. John never looked backward, only forward, and Taylor was a big part of what kept him moving in that direction with joy.

John is survived by his father, Michael Bedford; his son, Taylor Bedford; Taylor’s Mom, Kelly Bedford; his daughter, Megan Kretz (Adam); his grandchildren, Natalie and Oliver; his siblings Paul (Kathy), Peter, Muriel (Terri), Jim (Paula), Chris (Craig), and Charlie; his nephews Brian and Ian; and his nieces Julia and Beth. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Bedford. John leaves behind one final ask, in his own words:
