In Loving Memory of Jeffrey Rushawn Smith, BSN, RN It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Jeffrey Rushawn Smith, BSN, RN, on March 11, 2025. Born on March 23, 1976, in Topeka, Kansas, Jeffrey dedicated his life to service—both in the military and in healthcare. He served honorably as a medic in the United States Army for eight years and later devoted over two decades to patient care as a Registered Nurse ICHD & Clinical Coordinator with DaVita Dialysis. Jeffrey was known for his compassionate leadership, mentoring countless colleagues and providing exceptional care to his patients. His commitment to excellence in nursing and his unwavering dedication to those in his care made a lasting impact on the community. Outside of his professional career, Jeffrey was a passionate aquarist who enjoyed caring for his fish and creating vibrant, peaceful aquariums. He was also an avid marathon runner, gardener, and traveler with a love for exploring new places and cultures. Jeffrey will be laid to rest alongside his late father, Russell L. Smith. He is survived by his mother, Kathleen Smith; his siblings, Danyka Johnson and Kevin Smith; his nieces and nephews: Sherissa Johnson, J’Shon Smith, Stacia Mason, Gabriel Smith, Christian Smith, Jason Lee Johnson, Cameron Smith, Avery Smith, and Aubrey Smith; extended family members, and close friends. Jeffrey proudly served in the U.S. Army achieving the rank of specialist. He was awarded the Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, and Overseas Service Ribbon. Visitation will be held from 10:00am until 11:00am on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, at Frontline Community Church, 4411 Plainfield Avenue Northeast. A funeral service will follow at 11:00am at the church. A recording of the service is available at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_0BUg58Xs88 Burial will take place at Fort Custer National Cemetery at 10:30am on Thursday, March 27, 2025, with military honors rendered jointly by the U.S. Army and the all-volunteer Fort Custer Honor Guard. Burial arrangements were entrusted to Michigan Cremation & Funeral Care, Grand Rapids, 616-452-3006, exclusive providers of Veterans Funeral Care.
