Mrs. Gloria Jean Sherrick, age 79, of Greenville, passed away Wednesday evening, July 30, 2008 at Spectrum Health United Memorial-United Campus, Greenville, with her family at her side. The daughter of Lester & Cecil (Morris) Spyker, she was born on Aug. 20, 1928 in Cridersville, Ohio where she graduated as class salutatorian. In Cridersville she met Eugene B. Sherrick when he was discharged from the Navy after serving in World War II. They married on June 1, 1946.
After coming to Greenville, in addition to raising her family, she also worked as the office manager for Dr. Winniger and Dr. Jones, was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Ray I. Booth American Legion Post 101, enjoyed clog and square dancing, as well as music jamborees and festivals especially playing her banjo and fiddle. A skilled seamstress as well, Jean was an avid quilter and also enjoyed family genealogy, scrapbooking, and reading.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Margaret Matthews; and a grandson, Anthony Eugene Sherrick.
Surviving are her husband of 62 years, Gene Sherrick of Greenville; a daughter, Diana Lynn Richardson of Clarksville, Tennessee; a son, Gilbert E. Gib Sherrick of Cedar Springs; three granddaughters, Lisa & Scott Haislip of Rockvale, Tennessee, Dena & Rex Davis of Bell Buckle, Tennessee, and Christine & Kirk Medlar of Grattan; six great grandchildren, Ashley & Jeremy Gannon, Katie Davis, Austin Davis, Jennifer & Dustin Guldin, Avery Medlar, and Jordan Medlar; three great-great grandchildren, Colin Gannon, Cammie Gannon, and Alaysia Davis, with the fourth, Gracyn Gloria Noel Guldin, due in August; a sister, Mary Stumbaugh of Lima, Ohio; a brother, Ronald & Betty Spyker of Wapakoneta, Ohio; siblings-in-law, Glennis Jensen of Arizona, Jenny & Buster Vasher of Harrison, Don Sherrick, Sandy Quist, Shirley Johnson, and Norm Thome, all of Greenville; and many, many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 3, 2008 at the Brown-Teman & Christiansen Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 511 S. Franklin Street, Greenville, with the Rev. Ken Harger, pastor of Shiloh Community Church, officiating.
Instead of flowers, Jean would have appreciated contributions in her memory to the Flat River Community Library. Visitation is on Sunday from 12 Noon to 2:00 p.m at the funeral home.
