James Workman

April 3, 1933 — March 8, 2020

James C. Workman, Sr., age 86, of Newaygo, passed away March 8, 2020 at home under the care of his family and Spectrum Health Hospice. The son of Charles Plum & Gretchen (Allen) Workman, he was born on April 3, 1933 in Pierson. On August 8, 1953 in Lakeview, he married Lillian Jean Sorensen and together, they enjoyed over 66 years of marriage and raised seven children. Jim was a heavy equipment operator with Hartman Construction for over 25 years. After retirement, he and Lillian wintered in Texas and Arizona and he enjoyed bowling, fishing, hunting and watching the Detroit Tigers. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles & Gretchen Workman; and his siblings, John Workman, Bertha Nichols, Lawrence Workman, and Charles Workman. Surviving are his beloved wife, Lillian; their children, James & LouAnn Workman, Jerry & Kathy Workman, Jonathan Workman, Jody & Larry Haagsma, Jeffrey & Susie Workman, Julie & Jerry Fraley, Joseph & Jim Workman-Young; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Gordon and Doris & Garner Hall; and several nieces and nephews and friends. Visitation is from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Friday, March 13, 2020 in Rockford at New Hope Community Church, 6175 Northland Drive N.E., where memorial services will begin at 1:00 p.m. Pastor Josh Mateer, of New Hope Community Church, will officiate.
