James Duff Stone "JD", age 82, passed into Heaven July 2, 2026, and is now at Peace.
Born on August 19, 1943, JD lived a life defined by dedication, generosity, adventure, and a love for his family and community.
JD served in the United States Navy Submarine Corps as a missile technician and ships librarian, then went on to graduate from Detroit College of Law and built a distinguished career as a successful attorney. He was respected not only for his legal expertise but also for his integrity, sharp wit, and genuine care for others. He shared a remarkable 59-year marriage with his beloved wife, Maggie, a partnership built on love, friendship, and cherished memories. He is also survived by his brothers, Michael and Thomas, and his sister, Amy.
Outside of his profession, JD embraced life with enthusiasm. He had a lifelong passion for motorcycles and cycling, completing multiple rides through Death Valley to raise money for juvenile diabetes. Whether on two wheels or among friends, he approached every challenge with determination and a sense of adventure. JD was known for his infectious sense of humor and extraordinary memory for jokes. He had a gift for making people laugh and leaving lasting memories with everyone who knew him. A devoted member of the Macatawa Bay Yacht Club for more than 40 years alongside Maggie, JD proudly served as Commodore in 1987, contributing his leadership and love for the boating community. His commitment to serving others extended well beyond the yacht club. As President of the Board of Hospice, and through more than 20 years of volunteer service on the Celebration Committee, JD dedicated countless hours to supporting this amazing charity.
JD's legacy is one of service, laughter, perseverance, and love. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and colleagues. All are invited to celebrate his life with a Funeral Service at Christ Memorial Church, 595 Graafschap Rd, Friday August 28, 11:00 AM with Visitation prior beginning at 10:00 AM.
