James Albert Romine, age 91, of Greenville, passed away Monday, January 18, 2021 at his home following an accidental fall. The youngest child of Cleo (Crousau) & Robert Romine, Sr., he was born on May 19, 1929 in Marion, Indiana, who both died in 1937, leaving Jim and his siblings orphaned.
Jim, along with his older brother Bill and two older sisters, Dorothy and Marian, were sent to the Knightown Soldiers & Sailors Childrens Home in Knightown, Indiana until after eight years he was able to move to Gas City to live with his sister, Velma, and later with his brother, Bill. He graduated from Gas City High School in 1948 and in 1951 he proudly enlisted in the United States Marine Corps.
After his honorable discharge, he made his home in Fremont and worked for a couple of years as a heavy equipment operator in road construction. He then began a long career in factory work, spending 25 years as a foreman at Muskegon Piston Ring Company in Sparta, and retired from Edmore Tool & Grinding after nine years.
Over the years, Jim enjoyed deer and pheasant hunting, ice fishing, and gardening. On June 16, 1962, in Gratiot County, he married Leona Jean (Edgar) Baker and together they enjoyed nearly 59 years of marriage, were members of the First United Methodist Church in Greenville, and in retirement enjoyed golfing and traveling together.
He was preceded in death by his parents; seven brothers and sisters, Robert, Charles, William, Esther, Dorothy, Velma, and Marian. Surviving are his wife, Leona Romine of Greenville; his children, James & Tammy Romine, Jr., Debra & Bruce Nelson, Robert & Rose Romine, Cathy & Louis Carman, and Sherrie Romine & Jim Bischoff; twelve grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
