The Honorable Judge Charles “Chuck” Homer Miel VI, 87, of Stanton, Michigan, died peacefully surrounded by family from complications of colon cancer at Corewell Health Grand Hospitals - Butterworth in Grand Rapids, Monday, April 13, 2026.

Born in 1938 to Homer and Charlotte Miel, Chuck was a lifelong Stanton resident. He attended Stanton High School and later graduated from the University of Michigan with both a bachelor's and a law degree. While earning his bachelor's degree, he was a proud member of the Michigan Marching Band. Chuck remained a huge University of Michigan fan who loved showing his school spirit. He enjoyed watching all Michigan sports, especially his favorite, football, having season tickets at The Big House since being a student. He made many friends tailgating before games, where he was famous for his turkey sandwiches and butterscotch and cinnamon schnapps.

Chuck began his legal career in private practice and as an assistant prosecuting attorney working for his father, who was the Montcalm County Prosecutor. He transitioned to fully working in his private practice, having many great law partners over the years. For the last 12 years of his career, he served as a circuit court judge for Montcalm and Ionia counties serving most as Chief Judge for both counties.

His love of snow skiing made the mountains Chuck's favorite happy place. For more than 50 years, every December, he would enjoy a ski trip with buddies to Aspen, Colorado. In the springtime, skiing at Steamboat Springs, Colorado was a tradition with friends. While his children were growing up, his family also spent winter weekends skiing at Boyne Mountain. Chuck also had an affection for photography and enjoyed golf, a sport his family has had an avid passion for throughout the years.

Chuck was a pillar in the Stanton community and dedicated much energy and time striving to improve it. The following organizations were a part of Chuck's life: Central Montcalm Community Foundation (founder), Central Montcalm School Board (President), Rotary (longest serving member), City Council (Planning Commissioner), United Memorial Hospital Board, Stanton Library Board, Michigan Jaycees, the State Bar of Michigan, Chain Gang for the Central Montcalm High School football teams, and the Boy Scouts of America.

Chuck loved life and lived it well. He was fortunate to have many great friends who enriched his life and had many fun adventures. He was also a man of integrity and character, generous, and a dependable rock for his family.

Chuck is survived by his brother, Chris Mile; three children, Chas Miel, Mindy Weis, and Steve Miel; two grandchildren, Hailee Schlehuber and Tom Weis; one great-granddaughter, Kendal Taylor; foreign exchange families in Finland and Germany; and many other lifelong friends who were like family.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (https://www.cff.org/chapters/michigan-chapter), or the Central Montcalm Community Foundation (https://cmcommunityfoundation.org/). A celebration of Chuck's life is being planned for June 13, 2026 at 2 pm in Stanton.
