Henry Truer III, age 66, living most of his married life in the Bangor Michigan area, received his Crown of Life to lay before the feet of Jesus his Lord and Savior, from a brief battle of kidney cancer on October 8, 2026 @ 1:55 am at the home of his son Elijah (Lauren) Truer in Holland, Michigan. Henry was surrounded by his wife Christine, their children and their spouses.
Henry was born on August 16,1960, in Grand Rapids, Michigan to Henry Truer Jr. & Betty Ann Ulbrich. He grew up in the Grand Rapids area and graduated from East Kentwood High School in 1979. He later received a Bachelor’s degree majoring in Ancient Language, primarily Greek and Hebrew, and minored in Math & Science, from Grand Rapids Baptist College, presently named Cornerstone University.
On May 20, 1989, Henry married Christine Morrison in Lawrence, Michigan, at East Arlington Baptist Church and they shared 37 years of marriage. They welcomed into their family, 4 children. One who met Henry in heaven, the other 3 children they shared their lives with and love are Julie Lynn (Mike) Jager, Elijah Matthew (Lauren) Truer, and Abigail Noel (Isaac) Green. Henry was a good and loving husband and father.
Henry had many talents and occupations. He held many jobs throughout his working life, varying from Nuclear Operations at Cook Nuclear Power Plant, in Bridgman, Michigan to a brief stent as a Schwan Foods delivery driver. The one job he treasured the most was the 15 years he served as Senior Pastor at Horseshoe Community Bible Church in Grand Junction, Michigan. After retirement, together Henry and Chris traveled the country volunteering at many different Christian organizations including, Lake Ann Camp, in Lake Ann, Michigan, Black Mountain Children’s Home in Black Mountain, North Carolina, Sunshine Acres Children’s Home in Mesa, Arizonia and lastly at True Vine Equestrian Center, in Mattawan, Michigan. He served in several roles during his volunteering, ranging from electrical, painting, building and mowing lawns to various errands. He was an invaluable support to the Black Mountain Children’s Home in September of 2024 when Hurricane Helen hit the Black Mountain, North Carolina and surrounding areas with such devastation.
Henry’s desire to obtain knowledge never left him. He was an avid reader. The subject he enjoyed reading most was about his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Being a pastor was never far from him even after he left the role of Senior Pastor. Using their gift of hospitality, Henry and Chris welcomed many bible study groups into their home and Henry loved doing deep dives of the scriptures and leading others toward the Lord. He would even hold Theological discussions one on one with several young men. His absorption of the scripture was never ending, and he used that knowledge in practical ways, as commanded by Jesus to be a servant. Not only in his volunteer roles stated earlier but in many other ways as well, like helping people move, building homes and decks, roofing and many times just by dropping by a meal for those in need. Henry was always ready to offer a word of prayer for anyone that would allow him to pray with, and for them.
Henry traveled often with family and friends. He visited many countries by way of cruise ship and also Haiti when he and Chris went there on a short-term mission trip to serve, early on in their marriage. One of last trips he made with family was across the pond to Scotland and England. In 2019, Henry and Chris had the chance to walk in the literal footsteps of Jesus as they did a 14-day trip to Israel visiting many of the historical places that brought the bible to life.
When asked what he wanted to be remembered for, Henry would say that he would want to be remembered for emulating Jesus and be a blessing to those around him.
Besides Henrys wife and children, Henry is survived by his younger brother John (Shelley) Truer of Byron Center, Michigan, 3 cousins Cherri Mastbergen, Dwayne Mastbergen and Patti Bartholomew and many cherished nieces and nephews and extended family.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at the First Baptist Church, 1635 76th Street, South Haven, Michigan on October 30th, 2026 at 1:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers: please consider giving a memorial contribution to Lake Ann Camp, P.O. Box 109, Lake Ann, MI 49650, Black Mountain Children’s Home, 80 Lake Eden Rd, Black Mountain, NC 28711, or True Vine Equestrian Center, 22759 E. McGillen Ave, Mattawan, MI 49071. All three of these ministries were close to Henry’s heart, as they all either pointed children to Jesus, took care of the orphans as Jesus commanded or provided Christ-centered equestrian programs.
