Major H. William "Bill" Hurula, 83, of Holland, Michigan, was Promoted to Glory, surrounded by family, on June 11, 2024, after battling rapidly progressing Alzheimer’s Disease.
Bill was born on July 18, 1940, and graduated from Waukesha South High School in 1958. Following high school, he enlisted in the US Army. After completing his military service, Bill married Donna Larkins. Together, the couple entered The Salvation Army College for Officer Training in 1964 as members of the Defenders of the Faith session. Over 50 years of ministry with the organization, Bill served in a variety of pastoral and executive roles primarily across the Midwest. He retired in 2006 as National Financial Secretary for The Salvation Army's USA Headquarters in Alexandria, VA. In “retirement," Bill continued to work in a consulting role as an auditor for The Salvation Army Western Territory ARC Command and traveled frequently between Arizona, California, the Pacific Northwest, Hawaii, and Guam.
Bill earned an undergraduate degree in business from Park College and a MBA from Olivet Nazarene University. His career consistently demonstrated that Bill enjoyed numbers but he loved people. A man of integrity who was committed to his wife, their children and grandchildren, Bill frequently commented that family was his greatest blessing. On the weekends, he was passionate about golf, Brewers baseball, and Packers football. Bill was an exemplary soldier who lived on mission for God and honored Jesus Christ with his everyday ordinary life. He will long be remembered for his encouraging spirit, warm personality, deep gratitude, and commitment to Others.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Hurula and Irma (Dale) Hurula Robinson; his sister, Betty Donaldson; and his brother, Master Sergeant John Hurula USAF.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Donna; their children’s families, Scott and Karen Hurula with Greg, Heidi and Ale, and Kelsie; Jodi and Steve Kessler with Jacob and Allison; DJ and Becky Hurula with Annika and Katelyn; his sister, Kathy and Roy Baeitto; his sister, Paulette Oates; his foster brother, Milton and Marilyn Hagerstrand; sister-in-law, Floss and Butch Johnson; 18 nieces and nephews and their families; and myriad cousins, extended family members, and friends.
The family will receive visitors at The Salvation Army Holland Corps, 104 Clover Street, Holland, MI 49423, on Sunday, June 23, 2024, from 2:00 pm until 3:00 pm with the Celebration of Life beginning at 3:00 pm. Refreshments and fellowship will follow immediately after the service and a private interment will be held on a future date at Glen Oaks Cemetery in Hillside, IL.
