Hazel Howes

Mrs. Hazel Marie Howes, age 90, of Greenville, passed away Monday afternoon, January 30, 2012 at Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids. The daughter of Everett B. & Emma (Starr) Root, she was born on March 9, 1921 in Lakeview. On January 30, 1943, she married Frank Alfred Howes, Jr., who preceded her in death on February 11, 2001. She was also preceded in death by her parents; an infant daughter, Beverly Ann Howes in 1945; four brothers, George Root, Clarence Root, Frank Root, and Everett Root Jr.; and two sisters, Iola Matthews and Rosella Carter. A devoted wife and mother, Hazel found her greatest joy in time spent with her family. She was a long time member of Faith Baptist Church. Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Geraldine & John Johansen, and Barbara & Tom Worden, all of Greenville; a son and daughter-in-law, Gary & Connie Howes of Lowell; a granddaughter, Kim & Terry Simmons; seven grandsons, Todd Snider, Jason & Tracy Snider, William Howes, Jeff & Dolores Johansen, Steve & Anne Johansen, David & Rosalie Johansen, and Ryan & Kelly Worden; eighteen great grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Vernetta Root, Ethel Root, and Nancy Helms; a brother-in-law, Roger Howes; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation is Friday from 6-8 p.m. at the Christiansen Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 511 S. Franklin Street, Greenville, and on Saturday from 10-11 a.m. at Faith Baptist Church, 315 S. Greenville West Drive, Greenville, where funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. The Rev. Robert Winter will officiate and burial will take place privately at Rest Haven Memory Gardens.
