Harry Gubbins

Harry Lewis Gubbins, 92 died on Tuesday, August 4, 2020, after a long battle with congestive heart failure. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Marilyn "Lynn" A. (Shaw), three children, David Gubbins of Toronto, ON; Suzanne Schaefer (Ken) of Oceanside, CA; Kathryn Sorensen (Thor) of East Grand Rapids, MI; and grandson, Odin Sorensen also of East Grand Rapids, MI. Also surviving are sister, Moira A. Kogut (Don) of Mill Valley, CA; and brother, Philip Gubbins (Christine) of Bellingham, WA; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Harry is preceded in death by his parents Harry L. Sr. and Gladys E. (Moir) Gubbins; and sister, Margaret E. Roberts. Born in Windsor, Ontario on July 20, 1928, Harry grew up in Detroit, MI. In 1950, he graduated from Wayne State University and was inducted into the Army. Stationed at Fort Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska, he served during the Korean War. Upon returning home, he married and entered the Detroit, Michigan work force as an electrical engineer. The family settled in Royal Oak, MI. In 1958, they moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan where he took a position at Lear Siegler, Inc. and was pleased to be involved in the development of a "piece" of the Lunar Module. Harry and Lynn retired in 1988 and celebrated by traveling in Europe and North America. Harry enjoyed the symphony, opera, astronomy and being outdoors. As a former member of the Sierra Club, he spent many weekends in Michigan's forests and along her shorelines backpacking, hiking, camping, and skiing. Harry was a kind and loving husband and father. He will be greatly missed by his family. Cremation has taken place at his request. No memorial service will take place. Contributions can be made to the Grand Rapids Symphony or the Sierra Club Michigan Chapter. Cremation arrangements were entrusted to Michigan Cremation & Funeral Care, Grand Rapids, 616-452-3006.
